The huge displacement engines of the Detroit OEM's (previously known as The Big Three GM, Ford and Chrysler) were the catalyst for the rise in muscle car mania. In the middle 1960s, a Japanese/German invasion began. These car manufacturers included Daimler, Volkswagen, and Toyota, while Japanese carmakers included Nissan, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. This invasion gave birth to the first truly American muscle cars.

The LS6 engine was key to winning the horsepower wars in the late 1960s and early 70s. The Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 was the secret weapon used in the 1970 muscle car race. The Ford 428 Corvette Jet engine, Chrysler's 440 wedge engine and Dodge 426 Hemi had big engines. However, the LS6 option only was available for one model year, 1970. Buick also had a 455-cubic inch (7.46-L), engine in the 1970s.

The 1970 Pontiac Trans Am muscle car is one of the most sexiest. With its 290 horsepower (270 PS), the supercharged four-cylinder engine was the first to have such a high compression ratio. The engine that was the basis for the SD-455 muscular car was created by Pontiac engineers during the summer of 1972. Despite the high compression ratio, only 290 horsepower was produced by this car.

A 16-year-old car enthusiast sourced a 36K-mile survivor in the spring of 1977. This Trans Am was the first American car with a hood sticker and was subsequently driven by a long list of A-list celebrities. Burt Reynolds, who owned a Trans Am and drove the car on many of his movie sets, is perhaps most famous. It's easy to see why the car is known as the "Screaming Chicken".

If you are aware of what to look out for, you can avoid falling for scammers. These tips can help you identify scammers and stop them from stealing your money.

  1. Never pay upfront. Paying upfront to someone is a sign of fraud. You should always ask for payment after work is completed. Call the Better Business Bureau at 1-888-322-8138 to verify that the work is genuine. They can provide guidance and assistance.
  2. Ask for references. Ask for references to help you make sure that you're dealing only with reputable service providers. Online reviews are also a great way to verify the service provider's reputation. It's important that any company you deal is reputable.
  3. Do background checks. It is a good idea to do background checks before hiring. To see if the company has any complaints, check the BBB website. Also, make sure that the license number of the vehicle belongs to the owner.
  4. Don't be afraid if you have to leave. Sometimes, even when a company appears legit they try to scam you into paying too much. If you feel taken advantage of, don’t hesitate to quit. There are many other businesses you could choose to do business with.
  5. Don't be fooled by "free" services. Many companies offer free estimates or inspections. These companies will often charge you exorbitant fees later. Be sure to ask about additional fees before signing anything.
